Product Description

WOODY EXTRA (Apparent Woody Extra EC Herbicide) contains 300 g/L triclopyr (as the butoxyethyl ester), 100 g/L picloram and 8 g/L aminopyralid (both as hexyloxypropylamine salts), sold in 1L, 5L and 20L packs. The label describes it for the control of woody and herbaceous weeds in a wide range of agricultural and non-agricultural situations, including woody weed and fallow situations; blackberry is one weed it names. Our safety data sheet describes it as an agricultural herbicide.

It will damage plants you want to keep, and it stays active in the soil. The label says not to apply close to areas containing roots of desirable vegetation, or where treated soil may be washed onto areas growing, or to be planted with, desirable plants. Do not apply where heavy-rain run-off could reach areas with susceptible crops or plants. Aminopyralid and picloram remain active in the soil for extended periods, and the label gives plant-back periods that range from 2 to 24 months depending on the crop, rate and region.

How to use it. Rates depend on the method, the weed and its growth stage: see the Application Rates tab and read the label first. Do not let spray drift onto waterways, native vegetation or susceptible crops. Keep stock away from treated plants until they have died down, and check the label for the grazing withholding period.

Before you buy. The label signal word is Poison. Our safety data sheet (Warning) lists: harmful if swallowed, skin irritation, serious eye irritation, may cause an allergic skin reaction, may cause kidney damage through prolonged or repeated exposure, combustible liquid, and toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection (see the SDS tab).

Application Rates

Application Rates

Woody Weed Control

High-Volume Spraying:
The rate depends on the weed. For example, blackberry 350 mL or 500 mL per 100 L of water, and African boxthorn under 2 m tall 500 mL. See our mixing rates guide and the label table for your weed.

Aerial Spraying (Flood Plains, General Non-Crop Areas):
Use 1.5L to 10L per hectare

Controlled Droplet Application (C.D.A.):
Apply undiluted

Low-Volume, High-Concentration Techniques (e.g., Gas-Powered Gun, Sprinkler Sprayer):
Mix 335mL to 500mL per 10L of water

Boom Spraying (General Use):
Apply 2L to 4L per hectare

Boom Spraying (Fallow Land):
Use 200mL to 500mL per hectare

Blanket Wiper Application:
Mix 1 part Woody Extra with 4 parts water (1:4 ratio)

Important:
Always read the Woody Extra Herbicide label carefully for directions, safety instructions, and legal compliance. Misuse can be dangerous, ineffective, and may violate regulations.

Tips for use

Tips for use

Application Restrictions:
Do not apply to stressed weeds (e.g., from drought, flooding, extreme cold, or poor nutrition) as it may reduce effectiveness.
Avoid spraying if rain is expected within 1 hour or if leaves are wet from rain or dew.
Do not cut or clear blackberry or woody weeds for at least 6 months after spraying.
For flood-prone areas, treat after flooding. Weeds sprayed within 9 months of flooding may not respond well.

Spray Drift Precautions:
Avoid spraying near people, crops, gardens, or water to prevent harm from spray drift.
Only spray when wind is between 3–20 km/h (15 km/h max for aerial spraying) and avoid spraying during temperature inversions (usually evenings and early mornings).

Special Conditions:
In Tasmania, do not treat blackberry bushes with mature or ripening fruit.
Always follow state or local rules for spraying on native vegetation.

Protection Guidelines

Livestock Safety:
Sprayed poisonous plants may be more appealing to livestock. Keep animals away until plants are completely dead.
Dead plants can remain toxic—dispose of them by burning if possible.

Wildlife and Environment:
Do not contaminate streams, rivers, or water sources with the product or used containers.

Crops and Plants:
This herbicide can harm certain crops (e.g., legumes, tomatoes, fruit, and ornamentals). Avoid areas with desirable plants or waterways.
Do not use treated soil or manure for growing susceptible plants.

Residue Management

Pasture Use:
Avoid cutting pasture for hay or silage for 6 months if it’s to be used off-farm.
Do not use treated plants or manure for compost, mulch, or mushroom production.

Animal Waste:
Do not use manure or effluent from animals grazing treated pastures on susceptible plants or fields for at least 6 months.
If unsure about residue levels, test soil before planting sensitive crops.

Storage Instructions
Store in a cool, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight, food, and animal feed.

Safety and First Aid

Personal Protection:
Wear protective clothing, gloves, and goggles when preparing or spraying.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wash hands and protective gear after use.

First Aid:
For poisoning, call the Poisons Information Centre (Australia: 13 11 26).
If in eyes, rinse with water for 15 minutes and see a doctor.

Additional Notes
Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and consult a specialist for specific advice before use. For more details, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a selective and a non-selective herbicide?

A selective herbicide kills target weeds while leaving desirable plants unharmed - for example, a lawn-safe product that removes bindii and clover from buffalo or couch without damaging the turf. A non-selective herbicide such as glyphosate kills almost any green plant it contacts, so it is used for driveways, fence lines, garden-bed prep and total vegetation control, never on lawns.

What is a pre-emergent herbicide and when do I apply it?

A pre-emergent creates a barrier in the top layer of soil that stops weed seeds from establishing as they germinate. It does not control weeds that are already growing. Apply it before the target weed germinates - late summer to early autumn for winter grass, and early spring for summer grasses like crabgrass and crowsfoot - then water it in.

Will herbicide damage my lawn?

Only if you use the wrong type. Non-selective herbicides (glyphosate) will kill or badly damage turf. Selective lawn herbicides are formulated to be safe on common Australian turf at label rates, but tolerance varies by grass - buffalo is the most sensitive - so always check the label lists your turf type before spraying.
