Woody weeds do not slow down for winter the way lawn weeds do. They simply sit quiet. Spring is when they break dormancy and put on new growth, and that new growth is exactly when a foliar herbicide can actually work.

Spray too early, while a weed is still stressed from winter, and you can end up paying for the same job twice.

Quick Start, what to check this week

• Look for fresh leaf growth on the woody weeds you are targeting. That is your window.
• Check the weather. No rain forecast in the next hour, no dew on the leaves, and wind between roughly 3 to 20 km/h.
• Confirm the weed is not stressed by drought, waterlogging, or a recent cold snap. Stressed plants take up far less herbicide.
• Read the current product label before mixing. Rates vary by weed species and situation.

Why timing matters

Products like Woody Extra Herbicide (300 g/L Triclopyr, 100 g/L Picloram, 8 g/L Aminopyralid) work systemically. The plant has to absorb the spray through its leaves and move it down into the root system for the treatment to work properly.

That translocation only happens while the plant is actively growing. In autumn and winter, most woody weeds shut that process down to conserve energy, so spraying then wastes chemical and time.

When to spray, when to wait

Spray now if

• The weed has fresh, healthy leaf growth, the spring flush.
• It has not been affected by drought, waterlogging, or a recent cold snap.
• You can spray without rain forecast for at least an hour, and without wet foliage.

Wait if

• The plant still looks dormant, wilted, or damaged.
• The area has flooded recently. Woody Extra’s own label notes weeds sprayed within 9 months of flooding may not respond well.
• Wind is outside a safe spraying range, or you are near water, crops, or gardens you do not want affected.

Signs your woody weeds are ready

• Fresh leaf colour. New growth is usually a lighter, brighter green than old foliage.
• Active stem growth. New shoots or extending branch tips.
• No visible stress. No drought curling, no waterlogged yellowing, no frost damage.

Common timing mistakes

Spraying stressed plants

The label is explicit here: do not apply to weeds stressed by drought, flooding, extreme cold, or poor nutrition, as it may reduce effectiveness.

Spraying before rain

Avoid spraying if rain is expected within an hour, or if leaves are still wet from rain or dew.

Cutting or clearing too soon

Do not cut or clear treated blackberry or woody weeds for at least 6 months after spraying. The herbicide is still working its way through the root system.

Ignoring wind conditions

Only spray when wind is roughly 3 to 20 km/h, and avoid early morning or evening temperature inversions.

A practical spring woody weed plan

1. Walk the property now and mark which weeds have fresh spring growth.
2. Check each plant for stress signs before you spray it. Skip anything drought-affected, flooded, or frost-damaged.
3. Pick a calm, dry day with no rain forecast for at least an hour.
4. Mix to the current label rate for your target weed. As a guide, Woody Extra’s high-volume spraying rate is 150 mL to 670 mL per 100 L of water, but always confirm against the current label for your specific weed.
5. Keep livestock away from treated plants until they are completely dead, and do not cut or clear the area for at least 6 months.

How soon can I cut or clear a woody weed after spraying?

At least 6 months, per the Woody Extra label. Cutting too early can interrupt the plant’s uptake of the herbicide into its root system.

Is it safe to spray near a dam or creek?

No. Keep well clear of waterways, and always check your specific product’s buffer zone requirements on the label.
