METSULFURON METHYL is a herbicide containing 600 g/kg metsulfuron-methyl, in a 500 g pack. Metsulfuron 600 WG labels list non-crop areas (rights of way, commercial and industrial areas), pastures, winter cereals and brush weed control, for weeds such as blackberry, bracken, gorse, lantana and Paterson curse, with rates from 1 g to 20 g depending on the weed and the method (hand gun, boom, gas gun or aerial). Domestic and public service areas are listed alongside pastures, forests and rights of way for certain weeds. Lawns are not listed. Check the label on your pack before use.
It can damage plants you want to keep. The label says to minimise contact with desirable plants, and not to apply, drain or flush equipment on or near desirable trees or other plants, on areas where their roots may extend, or where the chemical may be washed or moved into contact with their roots. Many crop species are sensitive to metsulfuron methyl, legumes will be damaged or removed, and introduced grasses may be severely damaged. The product stays in the soil for a time that depends on soil pH, moisture, temperature and organic matter, and recropping intervals apply before sensitive crops or pasture species are planted.
Restraints and safety. Do not spray if rain is expected within 4 hours, do not treat weeds that are under stress or not actively growing, and do not store the prepared spray for more than 2 days. Do not contaminate streams, rivers or watercourses, do not apply to weeds growing in or over water, and do not spray across open bodies of water. When opening the container and preparing the spray wear elbow-length PVC gloves and goggles; if applying by hand also wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist and a washable hat.
