Application Rates

Application Rate:
Use 350–500 mL of Grazon Extra per 100 litres of water for most weeds. Always check the product label for the exact rate.

How to Apply:

Spray Coverage: Spray leaves and stems thoroughly until wet, just before the mixture starts dripping. Aim for full coverage, like painting a wall, ensuring even the inner parts of dense weeds are sprayed.

Equipment: Use any suitable equipment – from hand pumps and knapsack sprayers to motorized pumps with handguns.
Effectiveness: Proper coverage ensures the chemical kills both the weed’s top growth and roots. For larger weeds like mature blackberries, ensure all canes, inside and out, are sprayed.

Spray Volume Guide:

For blackberries (1–2 m tall): Use 3000–4000 litres per hectare.
For smaller weeds like ragwort: Use 500–1000 litres per hectare.

Important Notes:

Always read the label for specific instructions, rates, and safety information before use.
Follow all safety, storage, and disposal guidelines provided on the product label.

Tips for use

Equipment Needed
For large infestations (e.g., dense blackberry stands): Use a large motorized pump with a spray gun. You can hire this equipment or engage a professional applicator.

For smaller areas: A knapsack or hand pump spray unit works fine if you achieve good coverage (spray to the point of run-off).
Use a spray unit exclusively for herbicides to avoid contamination.

Additional tools: measuring jug, protective clothing (long sleeves, pants, gloves, hat), safety glasses, or a face shield.

Mixing Instructions
Use clean water (e.g., town supply or rainwater tank) for mixing. Avoid hard or alkaline water to maintain effectiveness.
Fill the spray tank halfway with water.
Add Grazon Extra, then fill the rest of the tank with water.
If needed, mix in a spray oil or wetting agent after the tank is full.
Keep the solution agitated and use immediately. If stored, agitate daily and use within 7 days.

When to Spray
Target young, actively growing weeds for the best results.
Apply when weeds are not stressed (e.g., from drought, heat, or pest damage).
Avoid spraying if rain is expected within an hour or if leaves are wet.
Do not disturb treated weeds for six months (e.g., by cutting or burning) to ensure the chemical fully takes effect.

First Aid
If poisoning occurs, call a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre at 131 126.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a selective and a non-selective herbicide?

A selective herbicide kills target weeds while leaving desirable plants unharmed - for example, a lawn-safe product that removes bindii and clover from buffalo or couch without damaging the turf. A non-selective herbicide such as glyphosate kills almost any green plant it contacts, so it is used for driveways, fence lines, garden-bed prep and total vegetation control, never on lawns.

What is a pre-emergent herbicide and when do I apply it?

A pre-emergent creates a barrier in the top layer of soil that stops weed seeds from establishing as they germinate. It does not control weeds that are already growing. Apply it before the target weed germinates - late summer to early autumn for winter grass, and early spring for summer grasses like crabgrass and crowsfoot - then water it in.

Will herbicide damage my lawn?

Only if you use the wrong type. Non-selective herbicides (glyphosate) will kill or badly damage turf. Selective lawn herbicides are formulated to be safe on common Australian turf at label rates, but tolerance varies by grass - buffalo is the most sensitive - so always check the label lists your turf type before spraying.
