NPK compound fertiliser is a type of fertilizer that contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). The letters NPK come from the chemical symbols for these elements. NPK fertilizers are used to help plants grow by providing essential nutrients.

Nutrients

NPK fertilizers provide nitrogen for leaf growth, phosphorus for root, flower, bud, and fruit growth, and potassium for overall plant health and disease resistance.

Ratios
NPK fertilizers have different ratios of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, such as 10-10-10 or 16-20-18. The ratio indicates the percentage of each nutrient in the fertilizer.

Form
NPK fertilizers can be solid, such as powder or granules, or liquid.

Application
NPK fertilizers can be spread by hand or machine to ensure even distribution of nutrients.

Benefits
NPK fertilizers are designed to maximize crop yield and quality.
They can be used on a wide variety of crops, from small plots to large fields.

Other nutrients
Some NPK fertilizers also contain additional nutrients, such as boron, iron, manganese, zinc, sodium, and selenium.
Complex compound formulations may contain a broader range of nutrients.

Application Rates

The application rate for NPK compound fertilizer depends on the type of fertilizer, the soil, and the crop being treated.

Granular fertilizers

Apply 1–2 lbs per 100 sq ft
Adjust based on soil test results

Liquid fertilizers

Dilute according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Apply every 4–6 weeks during the growing season
Crop-specific recommendations
Leafy greens: Use a high nitrogen ratio, like 20-10-10
Root vegetables: Use a balanced ratio, like 10-10-10
Fruit-bearing plants: Use a higher phosphorus and potassium ratio, like 5-20-20

Tips for Use

Soil composition

The composition and concentration of soil salts can affect how well plants absorb nutrients

Fertilizer type

Granular or powdered fertilizers are quick and easy to apply, while liquid or concentrated fertilizers need to be diluted and watered in

Fertilizer effect

Liquid feeds act immediately, while pelleted fertilizers take longer to release nutrients

Before applying fertilizer, you should read the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

What do the three numbers on a fertiliser bag mean?

They are the N-P-K ratio - the percentage by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Nitrogen drives leaf growth and colour, phosphorus supports roots and establishment, and potassium builds stress and disease tolerance. A blend like 15-4-12 is 15% N, 4% P and 12% K, which suits an established lawn; a higher-phosphorus starter blend suits new turf.

What is the difference between slow-release and fast-release fertiliser?

Fast-release (soluble) fertilisers green the lawn within days but are used up in a few weeks and can burn if over-applied in heat. Slow-release fertilisers feed steadily over 8 to 12 weeks or more, give even growth and are far more forgiving in summer. Many turf managers use slow-release as the base feed and a light liquid feed for a quick colour lift.

How much fertiliser does my lawn need?

Granular turf fertilisers are typically applied at 2.5 to 5 kg per 100 square metres, so a 500 square metre lawn needs roughly 12.5 to 25 kg - about one standard bag per application. Spread it evenly with a spreader and water in straight away. Always follow the rate on the bag, as concentrated blends are applied at lower rates than general-purpose ones.
