SPARTAN Pre-Emergent Herbicide is a 500 mL pack of a 480 g/L prodiamine herbicide (Group D). The label lists pre-emergent control of weeds such as barnyard grass, crowsfoot grass and winter grass (Poa annua) in established turf: Bahia grass, buffalo, carpet grass, common and hybrid couch, kikuyu, Qld blue couch, seashore paspalum and zoysia.
Where not to use it. The label says not to apply it to golf course putting greens or bowling greens, newly seeded, sodded or sprigged turf, turf that is stressed or not well established, or waterlogged soil. Do not apply if heavy rain is forecast within 48 hours, and do not irrigate to run-off within 3 days.
Replanting. Do not replant any crop or ornamentals, or over-seed with cool season grasses for winter cover, on treated areas for 6 months after application. Do not apply or flush equipment on or near native or non-target trees and plants, or where their roots may extend.
Timing and watering in. Apply before weed seeds emerge: early spring for summer weeds, and late summer to early autumn for winter grass. Wash in with at least 6 mm of rain or irrigation within 7 days of application, before weed seeds germinate.
How to use it. Rates depend on the weed, for example barnyard grass 1 to 3 L per hectare and winter grass 1 to 2 L per hectare. See the Application Rates tab, our herbicide mixing guide and the full label before mixing. Do not graze treated turf or feed clippings to poultry or livestock.
Before you buy. The label says very toxic to aquatic life: do not contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with the chemical or used containers. It may affect beneficial turf invertebrates. When preparing and using the spray it asks for cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist and elbow-length chemical resistant gloves. If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
