Top 10 Herbicides for Australian Gardens & Farms

The short answer: there isn’t one best herbicide. The best one depends on the weed and where it is growing. Use the table to pick, then read the notes. Always read the label before you mix.

How to choose the right herbicide

  • Weed type: broadleaf (clover, bindii, thistle), grass (ryegrass, couch), sedge (nutgrass) or woody (blackberry, lantana).
  • Where: lawn, garden bed, driveway, pasture or non-crop area. Selective products spare the lawn. Non-selective ones don’t.
  • Selective or non-selective: a selective herbicide kills target weeds and leaves the plants you want. A non-selective one such as glyphosate kills almost any green plant it touches, so keep it off lawns.
  • Knockdown or long-term: a post-emergent kills weeds that are up. A pre-emergent stops weeds from germinating. Some products do both for months.
  • Timing and weather: spray actively growing weeds, in calm weather, and check the rain rule on the label.

The top 10

1. Dicamba M: broadleaf weeds in lawns

Selective broadleaf killer (340 g/L MCPA + 80 g/L dicamba) for couch, kikuyu, ryegrass and fescue lawns. Not for buffalo. Label lawn rate: 100 mL in 15 L of water over 150 m². Don’t spray if rain is expected within 4 hours. From $27.50 (1 L), $88 (5 L), $258.50 (20 L). Read our Dicamba M mixing guide.

2. Multi Turf: broadleaf weeds in turf

MCPA 300 g/L + diflufenican 15 g/L + clopyralid 20 g/L. Home lawn rate on our product page: 5 mL per litre of water, sprayed on actively growing weeds. Temporary discolouration can occur on buffalo, kikuyu, carpet grass and Queensland blue couch, so test buffalo first. Complete weed death may take up to six weeks. Overseeding within three months may be affected. $36.30 (500 mL), $57.75 (1 L). Buffalo lawn? The Surefire Buffalo Bindii & Broadleaf weedkiller is out of stock at the moment. Use “Notify me” on its page.

3. Tempra 750 WG: nutgrass and sedge

Halosulfuron-methyl for nutgrass and Mullumbimby couch in established lawns (bent, buffalo, carpet, couch, kikuyu and others). Label lawn rate: 1.3 g in 10 L of water per 100 m². Use the mix within 24 hours and spray when nutgrass has at least 5 cm of new leaf. Effects start in 7–10 days with full results in 4–6 weeks. $38.50 (25 g), $99 (100 g).

4. WeedPro 540 Glyphosate: total weed control

540 g/L glyphosate kills almost any green plant it contacts. Use it on driveways, fence lines and garden bed prep. Never on lawns you want to keep. Visible effects usually take 3–7 days, or up to 2–3 weeks in cool or cloudy weather. $35.20 (1 L), $126.50 (5 L).

5. Salvo 212: grass weeds in gardens and crops

212 g/L fluazifop-P (a grass-selective herbicide). Controls annual ryegrass, barley grass, brome grass, couch, kikuyu and wild oats among broadleaf plants. It will kill lawn grass, so it is not a lawn product. $99 (1 L), $209 (5 L).

6. Starane Advanced: broadleaf and woody weeds in pasture and non-crop areas

333 g/L fluroxypyr. Label woody-weed high-volume rate: 45 mL to 900 mL per 100 L of water. Don’t spray stressed plants, and avoid spraying if rain is expected within one hour. $146.30 (1 L), $474.99 (5 L).

7. Woody Extra: blackberry, lantana and woody weeds

300 g/L triclopyr + 100 g/L picloram + 8 g/L aminopyralid. Avoid spraying if rain is expected within 1 hour or leaves are wet. $77 (1 L), $159.50 (5 L), $599.50 (20 L). Read our spring woody weed timing guide before you treat, and our triclopyr for blackberry and lantana guide.

8. Grazon Extra: the same actives as Woody Extra

Same three actives as Woody Extra. For mature blackberry, spray all canes inside and out, and don’t cut or burn treated weeds for six months so the chemical can take effect. $105.60 (1 L), $308 (5 L), $720.50 (20 L). If you compare Woody Extra and Grazon Extra, you are comparing the same actives from different brands. The price per litre is the main difference.

9. Numchuk Quad: long-lasting control on non-crop ground

Terbuthylazine 350 g/L, glyphosate 100 g/L, amitrole 60 g/L and oxyfluorfen 15 g/L. Gives knockdown plus residual control that our product page lists as 8–12 months, and it needs 20–30 mm of rain or irrigation within 2–3 weeks to activate. Avoid waterlogged soil or heavy rain in the next 3 days. Check the label for where it may be used. $86.35 (1 L), $495 (20 L).

10. Barricade: stop weeds before they start

480 g/L prodiamine pre-emergent for established turf (including couch, kikuyu, buffalo and zoysia), garden beds under mulch and potted plants. Apply in early spring (for summer weeds) or late summer to early autumn (for winter weeds like poa annua). Water in with at least 6 mm of rain or irrigation within 7 days. Don’t apply to newly seeded or stressed turf. $86.85 (250 mL), $269.50 (1 L).

What is the strongest weed killer?

“Strongest” depends on the weed. For woody weeds like blackberry and lantana, the triclopyr-picloram-aminopyralid mix (Woody Extra, Grazon Extra) is the heavy option. For clearing everything green, glyphosate is the standard. For long-lasting control, products with residual actives such as Numchuk Quad last for months. For a lawn, the strongest product is the wrong choice, because it also kills the grass. Pick by weed and place, not by strength.

What is the best long-term weed killer?

Two approaches: a pre-emergent (Barricade) that stops new weeds for the season on turf and garden beds, or a residual non-crop product (Numchuk Quad, 8–12 months on the label). Time pre-emergents before the weeds germinate.

Application tips

  • Read the label. Follow the rate, rain rule and safety directions.
  • Spray in calm weather to avoid drift.
  • Wear gloves, goggles, overalls and a hat. Wash up afterwards.
  • Spray actively growing weeds, and don’t spray stressed plants.
  • Rotate products to slow resistance.

Safety

Keep children and pets away until the spray has dried. Store in the original container, cool and dry. Avoid spraying near waterways. Wash hands after use. Some products need a permit in some states. Check the label and the product page.
